Choosing a Finish

A carry or duty gun and a range gun often need a different series, color and coverage. Read Cerakote for a duty gun vs a range gun before you book, and see the gunsmithing service menu guide if you also plan an optic cut or engraving, which are done before the finish.

What Cerakote work we do

We are a factory-certified Cerakote applicator offering single-color, multi-color, and custom camo finishes, including multi-color work with laser patterns. Coverage can be the whole firearm or only the parts you want changed. For handguns, the pricing above covers a complete handgun, the frame only, the slide only, and magazines. For rifles, it covers a complete rifle, the upper receiver, the lower receiver, and the handguard. All listed prices include prep work and application, so the figure you see for a part is the figure for that part prepared and coated, not a starting point with prep added later.

Owners come to this page for different reasons. A carry or duty gun usually puts wear points, a subdued color, and easy upkeep first. A range or competition gun can put appearance first, with multi-color work, camo, or a laser pattern. The gallery above shows finishes that have left this shop, including Tiger Stripe, Multicam-style, and designer patterns on our own Peacekeeper rifles, and single colors such as Armor Black, OD Green, and Flat Dark Earth. Tell us how the firearm is actually used when you book, and we will talk through series, color, and coverage for that use rather than sell you the most elaborate finish on the menu.

Choosing a series, color, and coverage

Cerakote describes its H-Series as a two-component, oven-cure system with a very wide range of colors, suited to parts with tight tolerance requirements, and its Elite series as a smaller set of earth-tone colors. Those are the manufacturer's descriptions of its own coatings, not test results from our shop, and we will tell you which series we apply and which colors are available for your part before you plan around a specific finish. Subdued colors such as Armor Black, OD Green, Flat Dark Earth, Sniper Grey, and Coyote Tan are the usual choice for a work gun; if you carry a firearm for an agency, check that agency's finish and color policy first, because those rules belong to the agency.

Any finish can show wear where it contacts a holster, a vehicle mount, or a hand, and Cerakote is no exception. How much wear appears depends on the holster, the carry method, and how often the firearm is drawn. We would rather say that plainly here than promise a finish that never marks. Inspect the wear points as part of your normal cleaning routine, clean with your normal products, and talk to us about re-coating a worn part if it reaches that point.

How the work is done

Our process is complete disassembly, degreasing, abrasive blasting for surface preparation, application, oven curing, reassembly, and a function check. Preparation is not a shortcut step: the coating is only as good as the surface under it, which is why the pricing on this page includes prep work rather than treating it as an extra. If your project also involves machining or engraving, plan the order of work with us. An optic cut, lightening cuts, front serrations, barrel porting, or laser engraving should be done before the finish, so the new coating is not cut through afterwards.

Cerakote drop-off is by appointment at our Greenville, Indiana shop. If you are not local, you can use our nationwide mail-in service: contact us with the project details for a quote, ship your unloaded firearm to our licensed Type 07 FFL facility, and we ship it directly back to you when the work is complete. The mail-in service page explains the steps, and our guide to Cerakote for a duty gun versus a range gun goes deeper on choosing a finish for how you use the firearm. Coming from across the river?
